I launched my business in March of 2019, as you all know by now. However, the toughest part for a brand spanking new entrepreneur is, “how do I get clients?” I heard a buzz going around about joining a BNI – I wasn’t sure what it was or how to even join one of those meetings. In April 2019, I met someone at a networking event that invited me to visit his BNI chapter in Lincoln, RI……..BNI Founders Chapter! Now, this meeting was at 7:00 am. So, this was tough to get to having a one-year-old, but I did make it. That day, I was clearly nervous—as it was my first time in a room of about 40 people. Yes, I was late to the meeting. I didn’t even want to walk into the room! Ha-Ha!
Well, everyone went around the room with their 60-second commercial telling everyone what they do and how can the rest of us help them get clients – I had mine too (yup super nervous!). After the meeting was over, a gentleman came up to me introducing himself as Mark Berger of Berg’s Eye Communications. We had a great conversation on how “he makes people famous”. Of course, I was intrigued. I told him that I am currently at a co-working space (Sprout CoWorking in Warren, RI), and that I am planning to have a grand opening for my business on 5/22/19 – only about a month from the day I met him. He told me that he wanted to help me promote my grand opening and even though it’s less than a month away, Mark thought he can make it happen.
What he did for me was amazing……so he promoted the event on all of the social media platforms, got me a 30-minute interview on the Women’s Business Network, published my story about Bookkeeping Towne, LLC, in the October Issue in Shop in RI and a few additional stories after my grand opening in Providence Business News & RI News Today. It has been great working with Mark – I found my first client from an advertisement that he publicized for my grand opening. It was definitely worth it to hire Mark! I also hired him to publicize my one-year anniversary celebration too. Because of Mark’s efforts, I received a proclamation from East Providence Mayor Robert DaSilva and the then- lieutenant governor turned Governor Daniel McKee also attended! I know there will be many more!
Mark Berger, Principal of Berg’s Eye Communications in Cumberland RI provides public & media relations strategies for clients. His mantra is that everyone has a story to tell ~ that means getting the word out about a product, service and/or event to as many places as possible to generate a buzz.
While getting to know Mark, I had the privilege of asking him a few questions about himself & his business….read on to learn more about this interview:
What is your process for getting a client noticed?
The story begins with researching a topic for the right message. Then, drafting a 1-2 page story, editing and finalizing it before distributing it to area media outlets.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
My biggest pet peeve are people who do not return calls or emails. It’s disrespectful to not leave a message. That person is saying your time is not important to them. It’s also a great way to lose customers.
Who inspired you – professionally?
I took exactly ONE public relations class at Rutgers University. Before that, I wrote for the University’s daily newspaper and studied to be a journalist. Elise Builder was the professor who taught the class and encouraged me to one day change course.
What would your future self say to your current self?
It would be years before realizing I would much rather disseminate the news than report on it.
What is your favorite dessert?
I love cake, preferably chocolate and no coconut or nuts. Give them to someone else or better yet, dump them in the trash.
I hope you all had a wonderful time reading all about Mark and his business! Are you interested to learning more about what Mark does or want to contact him? You’re in luck!…..Here’s his contact information:
